drMáriás is one of the most popular, controversial, critical and entertaining visual artists of the mid-generation in Hungary. Besides being a painter he is also novelist, art critic and musician, frontman of the Tudósok band.
drMáriás has become popular for his paintings on which famous politicians, dictators, criminals and celebrities are presented in the styles of famous artists. In this perspretive the world of art as an idealistic reality clashes with faces representing tragic history and weird present as reality. Have a look at the works melting togethet the feeling of longing for an artistic and happy world with the feeling of belongig to a grotesque and tough reality.
"The formal solutions of the paintings by drMáriás both cite the stylistic features of American pop-art and Russian soc-art, but the relationship in both cases is far distant. The artist uses all the stylistic elements with self-evident naturalness that can be drawn to the perspective that appears as a grotesque - and almost everything can be submerged to this aim. drMáriás paints as if he wrote a diary of his present time and historic experience: gently, but taking great care of the roughness. It is an important chronicle: if there were any doubts about what an absurd world we lived here at the turn of the millennium, it is enough to look at the images of drMáriás. The artist cites the impossible as a real Eastern European realist. "
